Duties The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) serves as an assistant with line authority to the unit Nurse Manager in providing leadership and direction to nursing staff. He/she is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice; demonstrating leadership in improving nursing care; and the administration, management, supervision and evaluation of both nursing care and nursing personnel on his/her designated unit and as assigned for the medical center on the off tours, weekends, and holidays. The ANM is heavily involved in the development of policy as well as standards of care and practice, and considers the impact on the organization.

The ANM demonstrates, promotes, creates and ensures a culturally divers workforce in which the values and needs of all individuals are respected. He/she provides an environment that fosters employees to perform to their full individual potential, providing education to the assigned unit as well as other units, as needed. The ANM participates in the interviewing process for staff selection, fact finding, counseling staff and evaluating staff performance.

The ANM responsibilities include demonstration of knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate and maintain care appropriate to the age related needs of patients served. This includes understanding changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to adult and geriatric population. The ANM will provide coverage for the Nurse Manager and assume the duties of the Nurse Manager in his/her absence.

Approximately 75% of this position is expected to be clinical (including but not limited to: assisting staff with patient care; providing licensed skills; providing coverage for breaks, committees, etc.; as well as providing care to groups of assigned patients) and approximately 25% administrative (including but not limited to: schedule development; assisting with proficiencies/evaluations; etc.).

In addition, the Nurse Manager is accountable and responsible for possessing the knowledge and skill to:

  • Communicate and interact appropriately with all internal and external customer;
  • Maintain confidentiality of electronic, written, and/or verbal patient/employee information;
  • Demonstrate managerial practices that include effective Labor/Management Partnership and leadership skills.
Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C 7402(d) and 7407(d).
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Education/Experience Requirements: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. (Transcripts required)
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.   • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.   • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience;
